It’s That Time Of The Year Again – Spring Break! [NSFW]

Spring Break!

Spring Break!

Yeah…it’s that time again…Spring Break…where most college aged folks find some place warm and throw their inhibitions to the wind.

So here is my PSA for those of you who are currently job seeking or for those of you who are gainfully employed: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA! If you do decide to share your craziness on social media sites (as is your right) perhaps keeping your profiles private may behoove you, in order to keep your shenanigans (hey…it’s St. Patty’s Day) from the wary eye of your employer or potential employer.

Here are my suggestions on what to avoid posting on social media:

Any drug references, or drug use:

Public Nudity / Sexually Explicit Material – do you really want co-workers seeing more than they’re supposed too?

Now, some of you may live in one of those states that have passed laws making it illegal for employers to use the content discovered in social media when making employment decisions (i.e. Maryland). I posed the question to an HR pro from my unit, and his response really hit me: “the law’s intention is great, but not enforceable.”

While, there has been some talk in the HR community about staying clear from candidate’s social media. I think this particular person was right. Aside from the honor system, what stops some employers from digging around your social media profiles? If you don’t know that they’re doing so, how can you hold them accountable? Needless to say, exercise caution when posting questionable material to your social media sites.

Have fun 2014 Spring Breakers!
